Addressing Mom's Concerns
"What if the queen flies away?"

Great question! Modern beekeeping uses queen excluders—special screens that keep the queen safely in the hive while worker bees move freely. Plus, queens rarely leave established hives unless conditions are really poor, which we'll prevent with proper care.

"Will the whole hive leave?"

Swarming happens when hives get too crowded, but it's 100% preventable! Regular inspections (every 7-10 days during spring) let us spot swarm signs early and take action. It's actually a sign of a healthy, growing colony.

"Are we experienced enough?"

Beginner beekeepers succeed all the time! We'll join the local beekeeping association, take a beginner course, and connect with a mentor. Plus, I'll be responsible for daily learning and care.

Safety First!
Proper protective gear

Full bee suits, gloves, and veils keep us completely safe during inspections

Gentle bee breeds

We'll choose Italian or Carniolan bees—known for being docile and beginner-friendly

Strategic hive placement

Position the hive away from high-traffic areas, with the entrance facing away from the house

Allergy testing

We'll all get tested beforehand, and keep an EpiPen on hand just to be extra cautious

Smoke calms bees

Using a smoker before opening the hive keeps bees calm and makes inspections peaceful
